Saint Augustine stands today as a tribute to its past. It has survived five centuries of history more than 435 years to stand as this nation's oldest city. Florida's ancient city was founded 42 years before the English colonized Jamestown and 55 years before the pilgrims landed at Plymouth Rock.
Settled by the Spanish in 1565, St. Augustine can arguably be called the nations oldest city. A charming mix of narrow cobblestone streets, Spanish and European architecture, and Old World style make the town an irresistible place.
Chief among the many thing in St. Augustine are the historic sites located throughout the downtown area. The centerpiece of the town is the Castillo de San Marcos, the oldest masonry fort in the United States. Built between the years 1672 to 1695, the Castillo served primarily as an outpost of the Spanish Empire, guarding St. Augustine and protecting the sea route for treasure ships returning to Spain. Although the Castillo has served a number of nations throughout its history, it has never been taken by military force. During the 18th century, the Castillo went from Spanish control to British and back to the Spanish, who remained in power in Florida until the area was purchased by the United States in 1821. The Castillo was made a National Monument in 1924 and became part of the National Park system in 1933. The park consists of the original historic Casti.
The city has 43 miles of beaches. Several marinas make boating accessible by sea, river or intercoastal waterway. Off-shore or in-shore fishing, diving and other water sports are accommodated in St. Augustine. World Golf Village and Ponte Vedra, home of The Players Championship, are a 20-minute drive from St. Augustine's historic district. Other attractions include the Fountain of Youth, The Oldest House and Spanish Quarter Village, among others.
